Gochandesu in Sumou means Thank You.

It is very much a Sumou phrase, definite Sumouspeak. You won't hear this phrase used anywhere outside the Kakkai.

An identical phrase is Gochandeshita.

Gochandesu is used for thanking, or requesting <i>(more on the thanking used with Gochandesu below)</i> a favor that is ongoing. Gochandeshita is basically the past tense, used when thanking your Aite for something already completed.

The phrase developed from the Japanese phrase "Gochisousamadeshita". This is used after a meal to thank the benefactor for the meal and to generally express the idea: "Thank you, this was good".

Gochandesu and Gochandeshita is used to thank for anything though, not only a good meal.

In fact Gochandesu is probably the most often heard phrase in Sumou.

It prononounced in many variations, meaning the same thing:

Gochandesu is the Sumou expression of Respect.

It means: "Thank you for making it possible for me to improve myself."

Therefore it is used heavily in situations where the words Thank You usually aren't employed in English.

For instance in Keiko during Moushiai, the Rikishi waiting for their turn, when a winner is decided in the Shoubu will run to the victor and shout: "Gochandesu, Gochandesu" to ask for the privilege of fighting him next.

When a Rikishi asks another for a favor, for instance to be helped tying a Mawashi, he will ask with "Gochandesu".

It is used when asking for anything, meaning: "Thank you for this help in improving myself."

It is used to express Respect for having every opportunity to follow along the Way of Sumoudou.

In Keiko when Butsukarigeiko is done, the Rikishi who is practicing Offense and charging into the Rikishi giving him Butsukari practice, will get into the Shikiri at the Tokudawara before the first hit and shout loudly Gochandesu.

This expresses: "Thank you for giving me this chance to Improve Myself."

Then he will charge. At the end of the Butsukarigeiko session he will walk up to face the Rikishi who's given him Butsukari practice and say loudly "Gochandeshita", meaning: "Thank you for having given me the opportunity to Improve Myself."
