Installing Emacs 23 from CVS

First make sure, you have CVS installed.</p> <table bgcolor="#000000" border="1"><tr><td border="0"><font color="#FFFF00"><b># aptitude install cvs</b></td></tr></table>

Emacs's CVS home is at <a href="http://savannah.gnu.org/cvs/?group=emacs">http://savannah.gnu.org/cvs/?group=emacs</a>.</p>

To get emacs23 from CVS, issue the following command:</p> <table bgcolor="#000000" border="1"><tr><td border="0"><font color="#FFFF00"><b>$ cvs -z3 -d:pserver:<a href="mailto:anonymous@cvs.sv.gnu.org">anonymous@cvs.sv.gnu.org</a>:/sources/emacs co emacs</b></td></tr></table>

This will download the CVS source for UTF-8 Unicode Emacs23 with Xft support. To compile it then with Xft support, issue the following commands:</p> <table bgcolor="#000000" border="1"><tr><td border="0"><font color="#FFFF00"><b>$ ./configure —enable-font-backend —with-xft —with-freetype<br /> $ make bootstrap<br /> $ sudo make install</b></td></tr></table>

Note that selection of Xft fonts through the user interface is not yet working at the time of writing — presumably there’s a lot of X ilLogical Font Description code to be worked around. ;-) You can select Xft fonts on the command line, like this:</p> <table bgcolor="#000000" border="1"><tr><td border="0"><font color="#FFFF00"><b>$ emacs —enable-font-backend —font "Bitstream Vera Sans Mono-10"</b></td></tr></table>

Setting X resources appears to work as well:</p>
